A short crib sheet with some links from a recent RAC Resettlement Webinar focusing on Education.

Teaching

Bursary and Support Staff

CCF

  • Best Oversight

Become a school governor – looks great on the CV for both Teaching and Bursary. Shows interest before applying and are always desperately needed. Contact your local council.

  • Work Experience

Ask local schools if you can go in and observe a few lessons in the subject/area you are interested in. Best to go through a contact. If no contacts, then a well written letter to the Headteacher would be appropriate – schools are understandably wary of unsolicited approaches.

  • Vacancies and Applications

Teaching:

TES website (https://www.tes.com/jobs/)
Some big independent schools have their own application portals, but almost all are still advertised in TES.

Bursary and Support Staff:

The ISBA (https://www.theisba.org.uk/vacancies/).
GDST (https://www.gdst.net/careers/vacancies/).
Also try Local Education Authorities and traditional recruiting websites www.uk.Indeed.com.

  • Training

Bursary and Support Staff:

ISBA “So you want to be a Bursar” - 2 day intro course.
CIPD introductory courses for HR Roles.

PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) – One year at Uni with placements at schools Teach First – Two year process in a deliberately selected challenging school
SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) – One year employed by a specific school with most training by the school – can lead to a PGCE through a linked University.
School Direct – A variation on SCITT
EYTS (Early Years Teacher Status) - Teaching ages 0-5.
Troops to Teachers - (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/funding-initial-teacher-training-itt/funding-initial-teacher-training-itt-academic-year-2022-to-2023#troops-to-teachers-undergraduate-bursary) £40k bursary over two years to do a degree in education and move into teaching.

  • Organisations/Websites to look at before an Interview:

Key Question for Bursary applicants – Thoughts on the potential of a new government adding VAT to private school fees.

TES – Times Educational Supplement

AGBIS – Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools

ISBA – Independent Schools Bursars Association

ISC – Independent Schools Council

HMC – Headmasters Conference

CCF. Many schools with a Cadet Corps will have an SSI to run all logistics and admin, working alongside a teacher Contingent Commander. Probably 2 or 3 days per week, in some schools it’s combined with a Support role to fill out the week.
Traditionally a WO role, but other ranks increasingly considered. SAA vital qual, as many others as possible are beneficial, particularly Outdoor Ed. Guess apply through Army Resettlement programmes.
