CAVALRY LUNCH CLUB REPORT

LUNCHEON MEETING ON 20th JUNE 2024 - GUEST SPEAKER DAVID LEAKEY CMG, CVO, CBE

A very engaging lunch was enjoyed by all who managed to evade the draw of several other events of the day, including Royal Ascot, knowing we were in a better place.   David gave us a thoroughly entertaining talk on the fun games and challenges he encountered during his time as Black Rod, which holds a significantly more demanding presence within the inner machinery of Parliament than most would ever imagine.

Beyond the ceremonial aspects of the post, about which he related some hilarious incidents, David left us in no doubt how important an independent prefect is in maintaining law order through high integrity and tradition within the very core of the Palace of Westminster.   The position demands someone who can hold a formidable presence when confronted perhaps by an aggrieved grandee.   Fearful that the authority of the post has been dumbed down since his time, David senses the processes and efforts to keep such characters, whether Members of Parliament, Civil Servants, or any of the security or other elements that abound within the Palace of Westminster, strictly within the honourable bounds of conduct and ethics, as expected of the mother of all parliaments, are becoming diluted; all matters that must be addressed he said, which received many a ‘hear hear’.

As with all past guest speakers, David is now an Honorary Member, so we will certainly be looking forward to welcoming him at future lunches.

The reviews and messages of thanks from members that follow a lunch are always greatly appreciated, and clearly endorse a popular format thrice a year ~ mid-Feb, mid-Jun, mod-Oct.   To that end we continue to seek fascinating guest speakers, that although perhaps not a household name, members will know their talk will be invigorating and thought-provoking.

Ensure Thursday noon 17 October, 2024 is in your diary for the next luncheon; price £64.   This will be in the spectacular library of THE REFORM CLUB, when the redoubtable Sir Robin Knox-Johnston will be in the chair, so be sure to bring a colleague friend wife or fellow member.   Book early for what promises to be a sell-out event.
