CAVALRY LUNCH CLUB LUNCH REPORT

LUNCHEON MEETING ON 26TH OCTOBER 2023 - GUEST SPEAKER SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL

Thursday’s gathering with our guest speaker Sir William Russell, again was an immensely informative talk over a greatly enjoyed lunch. Not only is William one of the City's leading
figures, who became its 692nd Lord Mayor, unusually for a double term, but a notable informal authority in global high finance.

The three corner stones for his talk were the Mayoralty and its Role, The Importance of Financial Services and Destination City.

After a fascinating introduction about the Mayoralty, and its role through his own extraordinary experience during a pathogen pandemic, when he undertook over 2,500 zoom calls from around the world, (opposed to a month of the year in the air), William expressed what an unquenchable champion he is of what he holds as the best city in the world. London and its core hub, the City, now holds his forthright confidence and enthusiasm in being able to convince both Leaver and Remainer alike that our capital city has everything ahead of it, still.

He explained how the financial leverage this magnificent metropolis creates pervades most other domains, such as technological innovation, higher education, the arts and culture, tourism, charitable support and medical advancement and holds the catalyst for being a destination city.

He went on to illustrate why and how, as a destination city, existing global corporations were staying put, which along with clearing, helped lure in other prime movers, by the fact that the Square Mile is where the major players needed to be. William also expressed how it was becoming a most promising centre for new innovative avenues of investment, specifically green finance.

A list of everyone who attended has been requested by several and will be circulated shortly.

Reviews clearly endorse the popular format in what are becoming must-attend events, with invigorating and thought-provoking speaker-lunches every four months (Feb, Jun & Oct). Furthermore, the need to rely solely on household names does not apply, since speakers eminent in their field of endeavour, are every bit as fascinating and engaging.

Ensure Thursday noon, 22 February 2024 is in the diary, when the historian and adventurer James Holland will be in the chair, and corral fellow alumni to joins us; remember too, that friends, wives and colleagues are sure to enjoy the occasion and atmosphere as well.
