LUNCHEON MEETING ON 26TH FEBRUARY 2026 REPORT

~ GUEST SPEAKER Professor Michael Mainelli ~

Once again this was a well-attended and much enjoyed gathering of members and their guests alike, who were absorbed by Professor Michael Mainelli’s dextrous parallels between campaigns of conflict and commerce, impressively researched to illustrate dramatic events through history.

Michael delivered a stimulating and wide-ranging address on “Reconnaissance, Risk and Reward: What the City Can Learn from Cavalry Tactics,” drawing persuasive parallels between classical mounted warfare and the realities of modern finance, innovation strategy and geopolitical competition.

He illustrated how the enduring cavalry principles of speed, surprise, disciplined reconnaissance and decisive action translate directly into successful market positioning, corporate manoeuvre and national strategy.   In an era crowded with data yet often starved of judgement, he emphasised that advantage lies not in noise or reaction, but in the calm clarity of intelligence, calibrated action with risk-taking and the confidence to act at the decisive moment.

From hostile takeovers to hostile states, the common thread was leadership under uncertainty.   He concluded on an encouraging note, arguing that despite present global turbulence, London continues to hold a vibrantly dominant position on the world stage, its strength rooted in deep pools of expertise, trusted institutions, global connectivity and an exceptional capacity to adapt to changing conditions.

Michael, now our latest Honorary Member, says he much looks forward to keeping in touch with his new club, and wearing his new tie.

For the diary, Thursday 4th June 2026 - CLC summer cocktail party to be held at the Guards Chapel.
