The Cavalry Lunch Club (CLC) will meet for lunch in The Cavalry and Guards Club on Thursday 20th June 2024. Our guest speaker is Lt Gen David Leakey CMG CVO CBE who will talk about 'Parliamentary Fun and Games as Black Rod'.

Timings - 12:00 for 12:30

Lieutenant General David Leakey CMG CVO CBE

After reading law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. His first job (for nearly 40 years) was in the Army, commanding 2nd Royal Tank Regiment and 20th Armoured Brigade, during and after the Cold War, Chief of Staff in Northern Ireland, commanding British and multinational forces on operations in Bosnia and Kosovo as a major general, interspersed by senior appointments in the Ministry of Defence and the European Union, running the latter’s Military operations in Africa, the Balkans, Georgia and the Indian Ocean.

Retiring from the Army in 2010, he undertook a variety of media and consultancy projects, including some university lecturing until early 2011 when he was appointed Black Rod, sometimes known as the Queen’s representative in Parliament and, more practically, the Chief Operations Officer, which he held for seven years until December 2017.

David now works in a number of advisory and executive roles in a US-based Business Systems IT developer, a UK-based industrial chemicals and gasses group and an App developer in London.

He retired as the Chairman of the National Childrens Orchestras of GB in 2014 but is Chairman of Governors at Sherborne Schools and remains as trustee, governor or chair of numerous charities, sporting, musical and military organisations. He has a passion for music (a choral singer and ‘very amateur’ pianist), has played squash at national level and enjoys golf, tennis, skiing, shooting and chain-sawing (his relaxation therapy).
