Next Guest Speaker - Professor Michael Mainelli KStJ OMRI FCCA FCSI(Hon) FBCS. President of the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Chairman of the Z/Yen Group.
Michael is a scientist and economist promoting societal advance through better finance and technology. Originally a research scientist in aerospace, architecture and cartography he is Chairman of Z/Yen Group, the leading commercial think tank in the City of London renowned for its Global Financial Centres, Smart Centres, and Global Green Finance indices. His career includes developing the first digital maps of the world in Switzerland in the 1980s, senior partner of accountancy firm BDO Binder Hamlyn, Corporate Development Director for the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Evaluation & Research Agency and mergers & acquisitions banking with Deutsche Morgan Grenfell. Michael served as the 695th Lord Mayor of The City of London (November 2023-24), having previously held the office of Sheriff of London (September 2019-2021, when our previous guest speaker Sir William Russell was Lord Mayor).
His theme as Lord Mayor was ‘Connect To Prosper’, celebrating the many Knowledge Miles of the Square Mile, the world’s coffee house, a programme highlighting the City’s ability to solve global challenges. Amongst other achievements, Connect To Prosper led to the 70 nation AI Quality Infrastructure Consortium, Oxford’s Global Alliance for Living Evidence on aNxiety, depressiOn and pSychosis and the Commonwealth’s CommonSpace initiative promoting sustainable use of outer space for the benefit of its 56 member countries.
Michael attended Harvard University graduating with a BA degree in government, studied fourth-year engineering, mathematics & computer science at Trinity College Dublin, and completed an MPhil and PhD at LSE in statistics and chaotic systems, as well as accounting, computing and securities trading qualifications.
He has British and Irish nationality, and is also the first American-born and first Italian citizen to be elected to the Mayoralty. He is Emeritus Professor of Commerce and Life Fellow of Gresham College, a Fellow of King’s College London, Birkbeck College, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Goodenough College, visiting professor at UCL’s Bartlett School and City St George’s University of London, Honorary Bencher of Middle Temple, senior independent director of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service and of a listed mining company. He is active in 17 livery companies, past master of the World Traders and has charity interests in the environment, education, and care.
He is married to Elizabeth and together they have three children; they live in Kensington.
